For a lot of people in Folkestone, the local recycling centre on Ross Way is the first thought when there is rubbish to shift. It is a good service and it is worth using. But the rules have tightened, and turning up unprepared can mean a wasted journey. Here is what you need to know before you go.
You have to book a slot first
This is the one that catches most people out. Kent County Council requires you to book a slot online before visiting any of its household waste recycling centres, and entry without a booking is not permitted. You can normally book for the same day or in advance, but at busy times, particularly weekends and bank holidays, slots go quickly.
Opening times and slot availability do change, so always check the official Kent County Council recycling centre page before you set off rather than relying on what you remember from last time.
Your vehicle might not be allowed in
There are two things to watch here:
- The height barrier. The Folkestone site has a height barrier, so taller vehicles simply cannot get in.
- Vans and trailers. These are subject to vehicle restrictions and may need a permit arranged in advance. You cannot just turn up in a hired van and expect to be let through.
You also cannot carry waste in on foot. If you do not drive, or your vehicle is not eligible, the tip is effectively closed to you.
What the tip will not take
Even with a booking and the right vehicle, some waste is turned away:
- Business or commercial waste. Household recycling centres are for household waste only. If you run a business, you cannot use the tip, and you need a licensed waste carrier instead. We cover this in our guide to business waste in Kent.
- Certain DIY waste beyond set limits. Some DIY and construction waste is chargeable or restricted by volume.
- Upholstered furniture needs special handling. Sofas and armchairs are now treated differently under new environmental rules, which we explain in our guide to getting rid of a sofa.
There is also a residency requirement. If you do not pay Council Tax to a Kent council, you may be charged to use the site.
When the tip is the right choice
To be clear, we are not trying to talk you out of it. If you have a car boot of general household waste, you can get a slot, and you have the time to load, drive, queue and unload, the tip is a sensible option and we would rather you used it.
When it is not
A private collection makes far more sense when:
- You have more than fits in one car load
- The items are heavy, bulky or awkward and you would rather not lift them
- Your vehicle cannot get through the barrier, or you do not drive
- You cannot get a slot when you actually need one
- It is business waste, which the tip will not take at all
- You simply do not have a free afternoon to spend on it
