When you have waste to get rid of, the two most common choices are hiring a skip or booking a man and van clearance service. People often assume a skip is cheaper, but the honest answer is that it depends entirely on the job. Here is how they compare.

Who does the loading

This is the biggest practical difference. With a skip, you load it yourself, over however many days you have it. With a man and van service, the team does the lifting, loading and carrying for you. If the waste is heavy, awkward or upstairs, that labour saving can be the deciding factor.

How you pay

A skip is usually a fixed cost for a given size, whether you fill it to the brim or only half way. A man and van service is typically based on how much is actually removed, so you pay for the space your waste takes rather than for fresh air. For smaller or uneven loads, that often works out more sensible.

Permits and parking

If a skip cannot fit on your own driveway and needs to sit on the road, you will usually need a permit from the council, which adds cost and time. A man and van service arrives, clears, and leaves, with no permit and no skip sitting outside your home for a week.

Speed and convenience

  • Skip: good if you are working on a project over several days and want to fill it gradually at your own pace.
  • Man and van: good if you want the waste gone today, in one visit, with none of the heavy lifting.

So which should you choose?

As a rough guide, a skip can suit a long running renovation where you generate waste slowly over time. A man and van clearance suits almost everything else, especially house clearances, single collections, garden waste and anything you simply want taken away without the effort.
