It sounds unfair, but it is the law. As a householder you have what is called a duty of care for your waste. If you hand it to someone who then dumps it down a country lane, and it is traced back to you, you can be the one facing a fine. The good news is that protecting yourself takes only a couple of minutes.

What the duty of care actually means

Your duty of care is simple. You must make sure your waste is only passed to someone who is authorised to take it. Authorised means they hold a waste carrier licence registered with the Environment Agency. If you skip this check and your waste ends up fly tipped, the responsibility can land at your door.

The checks that protect you

  • Ask for their waste carrier licence number. A legitimate company will give it without hesitation.
  • Check it on the public register. The Environment Agency keeps a free online register of registered waste carriers that anyone can search.
  • Ask for a waste transfer note. This records what was taken and confirms where it is going. Keep it safe.
  • Look for a real business. A marked vehicle, a proper phone number, a website and reviews all point to a company that stands behind its work.

Red flags to walk away from

Some warning signs are worth taking seriously:

  • A price that seems far too cheap to cover proper disposal
  • Cash only, with no paperwork offered
  • An unmarked van and no company details
  • Vague or evasive answers when you ask about their licence

If a deal feels too good to be true, it often is. The saving disappears very quickly if you are later asked to pay a fine for waste you thought had been dealt with.

Southeast Waste Solutions is a fully licensed waste carrier, and every job comes with proper documentation. You can read more about how we work on our Commitment and Values page, or ask us for our details before you book.

Hiring a clearance should give you peace of mind, not a hidden risk. A quick licence check is the easiest insurance you will ever take out.
