It is a fair question, and the honest answer is almost everything, but not literally everything. Here is what a clearance normally covers, what needs a bit more care, and what to flag when you get your quote.
What we take as standard
The vast majority of what fills a home is straightforward for us to remove:
- Sofas, chairs, tables, wardrobes and all general furniture
- Beds and mattresses
- Fridges, freezers, washing machines and other white goods
- Televisions, computers and small electricals
- Carpets, underlay, curtains and blinds
- Clothing, books, kitchenware and general household items
- Garden furniture, tools, and the contents of sheds and garages
- General clutter and bagged rubbish
Items that need particular handling
Some things are absolutely fine to take, they just follow a specific route:
- Upholstered seating. Sofas, armchairs and similar are now subject to specific environmental rules and must be kept separate from other waste. We explain this fully in how to get rid of a sofa in Kent.
- Electrical items. These go through the electrical waste recycling stream rather than general waste.
- Fridges and freezers. These contain gases that require proper treatment, so they are handled separately.
What needs a specialist
A small number of materials are regulated and require a specialist licensed service rather than a standard clearance. If you think a property might contain anything of that nature, tell us when you get in touch and we will advise you on the correct route. It is always better to ask than to assume.
What happens to it all
Everything is taken to a licensed facility and sorted. Metal, wood, hardcore and green waste each go to their own recycling streams, and anything reusable is separated out. Only what genuinely cannot be recovered goes further down the chain. The full journey is in what happens to your waste after we collect it.
Set aside what you are keeping
This is the most important thing you can do. Before the day, separate anything you want to keep, particularly documents, jewellery, photographs and small keepsakes, and put them somewhere clearly out of the way. Once a clearance is underway it moves quickly.
